The unique, detailed, and long story or inspiration behind this piece (please note that art can mean something different to each person regardless of what it meant to the artist herself so please do not feel like you cannot connect to it uniquely):
I remember the first class in a tajweed (Arabic pronunciation) course palpably. The teacher decided to place us in three different groups according to how well we could recite a randomly chosen section of the Quran. Before this point, we introduced ourselves to the teacher and one another as this was the first class, and an elusive opportunity given the caliber (may God bless it) of this teacher. In my introduction I briefly described who I was, and shared that I knew how to recite Surah Al-Mulk as I had taken to reciting it nightly. Presumably, the consolidation of memory in sleep helped to cement it. When it was my turn to recite a section of the Quran, chosen at random, so the teacher could see if I should be placed in level one, two, or three (three being the level for those who recited their randomly chosen section most easily), I fumbled and I can't imagine my voice didn't skip, crack or break as I felt anxiety or fear rise up like a rocket up to my skin and throughout my body and as I struggled to make out words outside of my native tongue and outside of my nightly interaction, conveyed in an unfortunate mode, dark mode (yes, unknown letters and symbols in white against a black background and in small font) in broad daylight in front of people I had introduced myself to quite jovially and comfortably minutes before.
What mesmerizes me still is the following: Abud-Darda (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He who follows a path in quest of knowledge, Allah will make the path of Jannah easy to him. The angels lower their wings over the seeker of knowledge, being pleased with what he does. The inhabitants of the heavens and the earth and even the fish in the depth of the oceans seek forgiveness for him. The superiority of the learned man over the devout worshipper is like that of the full moon to the rest of the stars (i.e., in brightness). The learned are the heirs of the Prophets who bequeath neither dinar nor dirham but only that of knowledge; and he who acquires it, has in fact acquired an abundant portion." [Abu Dawud and At- Tirmidhi].
And, graciously, the following was shared with me in the same course to which I painfully returned (painful because it was painful to overcome the embarrassment and/or fear of failure and/or feelings of inadequacy or toxic shame that surged within me by returning to the scene of the randomly picked verses to continue reciting publicly and with difficulty other parts of the Quran):
'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur'an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur'an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
This art piece, also created with difficulty, symbolizes both that double reward and how even the fish were on my side and the side of any seeker. It's great as a gift to yourself or another, regardless of where you are on the path of knowledge.
